Is Body Image Important?

So lately I have been on this whole kick about my body image. While I love my shape, I must say… I need to tone. I know so many women (and some men) that can relate, but really… how important is body image? After surveying a group of men, young and old, I hate to tell you ladies, but it is extremely important. Men are visual, and a well kept body not only appeases a mans appetite, but also signifies that you keep yourself up. Recently, I went on a vacation; one of my friends mentioned that she hated to see a fat black woman… (ouch), and I know that sounds kind of harsh, but I must say… I understand her rationale. That leads me to the most important point; while body image is vital to visually stimulate your partner, it is more important to your health and future outlook on life.


After polling these men who overwhelmingly agreed that they want an” in shape” woman, I had to get to the bottom line. One participant even told me he was going to build a weight clause into his prenup. WOW! But I must say, I am not against men wanting a woman to remain a certain way (but, I do think the prenup clause is a bit much). After all, this is what attracted him to you in the first place and THAT in itself IS the bottom line. Men want and NEED to hold on to the things that attracted them to you in the first place. Body image is among one of the top items on their checklist along with confidence and independence. Now, we must take into account having children, so there is a slight margin for change, but there is no excuse for sloppiness. I hate to sound harsh, but as I have already stated, not only is it for the esthetic, but for the health benefit as well. Just be cautious ladies. Don’t “fall off!” And a word to the men: if you expect this of us, please make sure you keep it tight too! No beer bellies!

So ladies, what do we need to do? Well first of all… do this for yourself! I know the basis of this article stemmed from me polling men about how they felt about a woman’s physique, but you have to want this and need this for you; if not to impress a man, do it to be healthy and vibrant. Secondly, observe your condition… are you overweight, in need of toning, or just unhealthy? Change eating habits and gradually incorporate a simple exercise regiment into your daily life. It really can be that simple, just make up your mind to do it.
