Walking down Goshen Street in Richmond, VA, I hit a patch of cobblestone in the alley right before the entrance of the rather chic men’s clothing store, Limited Edition (http://www.limitededitioninc.com/). I thought to myself, “If I break my heel, how will I walk into this store and interview one of the most promising new artists that we have seen in awhile?” Her name… Melanie Fiona and she is unquestionably one to look out for. In her new single “It Kills Me,” Fiona belts out the most amazing melody and captivating lyrics… a hit for sure.
As I waited for the endless line of fans to clear, I cautiously stepped forward to introduce myself. Melanie, dressed in thigh high black boots and a form fitting leather jacket, shook my hand enthusiastically with a smile on her face and said, “Hi, I’m Melanie!” I could tell right away that it wasn’t a front; Fiona has a genuine, down to earth nature and immediately we both felt comfortable.
· What/ who are your influences?
She explained that her parents were a huge influence. Immigrants from Canada, her parents were the definition of hard work. In addition, her father played the guitar and her mother loved to sing. Her earlier influences were artists like Bob Marley and recent influences, Alicia Keys. “Alicia never comprises who she is,” Melanie says; certainly a trait that can be respected by most everyone.
· If you could have an hour with any artist, past or present, who would it be?
Without hesitation she says Bob Marley. Melanie went on to explain that Marley was revolutionary with his music and she would love the chance to be able to speak with him to gain an understanding of his struggles as an artist during his era.
· Name one item you cannot live without on the road.
“My camera because I LOVE to take pictures and I want to capture all the beautiful things I see.” Another example of how grounded Ms. Fiona really is. I thought for sure she was going to say her lip stick or flat iron, but she sees beyond that and I dig it.
Do not sleep on Melanie Fiona! She has real talent. She’s beautiful, sultry and astoundingly energetic… a star has been born! Check out Melanie Fiona on her official site: www.MelanieFiona.com .
